Cooper's storming finish nets Youth Olympics gold

Leicestershire's Harriet Cooper stormed to gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey yesterday. The City of Leicester swimmer powered to victory in the 100 metres backstroke at Trabzon minutes after finishing fifth in the 50m freestyle.

The 14-year-old trailed Russian Daria Ustinova for most of the final but finished strongly, touching home in a personal- best time of 1 minute 2.73 seconds.

However, Cooper said that she was never worried during the race."Going into the final as the fastest qualifier was a real confidence boost for me and it made me really confident about the race," she added."Despite having the freestyle just before it, I was still confident and I thought it was going to be a lot worse than it actually was."I am probably at the fittest I have been right now and that showed in the pool as I won and recorded a personal best at the same time, which was great."It makes me really proud to have won this gold medal for my country."It is just such an amazing feeling to be on the podium with the national anthem ringing out."I felt in great shape and I am just really pleased to have won the gold, even if I did have to leave it late."She also clocked a personal best, 26.51 seconds, in the freestyle event.Cooper's impressive Turkish trip, she also finished fourth in Monday's 4x100m freestyle relay, is far from over with the 4x100m medley relay scheduled for today. The Loughborough High School student said: "This gold was amazing but I am not done yet."Confidence is really high with myself and the rest of the team."We think that we can go out there and swim really fast and win the gold."I just want to play my part, put in a strong performance and end on another high with another gold – that is the aim."
